A disappointing result from a game where we didn’t deserve to lose. Having won a close encounter 1-0 at the start of the season we knew that the return fixture against CTK would be a hard game. The lads started well with Rich putting some good balls into the corner to feed our wingers, this resulted in a good competitive first half with the only real chance falling to Brinklow but we failed to convert. Our defending was looking solid and CTK had there share of the possession but were unable to create a notable chance in the first half. The second half started well with Elliot hitting the post with a fine header that the keeper could only watch. A fine run and some blistering pace saw Wendell burst through the CTK defence and give Brinklow a 1-0 lead. It was at this point that the legs started to tire, however very few chances were coming CTK’s way and it was only a defensive error followed by a bizarre own goal that came off Matty’s toe and rebounded off Arrons leg that gave CTK the lead. Brinklow rallied, but there was little time left on the clock and CTK saw out the remainder of the game. I can’t fault the lads’ effort and commitment against a very good CTK side and on reflection a draw would probably have been a fair result, having said that, with a bit of luck this was a game we could have won as we certainly had more opportunity to score.
Some horrid weather part way through this game didn't dampen the spirits and it was nice to see the lads playing with a smile on their faces!! Special mention to both centre-halfs (Craig and JJ) today who were excellent and who both got on the score sheet, with JJ's flying header from a corner being the high light of the day. In truth we didn't get out of second gear today with the 7-0 scoreline reflecting a comfortable win, we will however need to up our game when we face stronger opponents in our forthcoming games.
A positive start to this game meant we were soon 3 goals up and despite Binley Woods gaining a goal back that was clearly offside Brinklow saw the 1st half out without ever really looking in trouble. A goal early in the 2nd half effectively knocked the stuffing out of Binley & some fast flowing 1 touch football resulted in a further 3 goals and this effectively killed the game off. Special mention to Jack for his 5 goals today and for reacting well to the intimidation from the Binley Woods defence. Also to Simon for his first assist in a Brinklow game.
Certainly not our best performance and a 2-0 deficit at half time was deserved despite several very clear cut chances which were not converted. The players reacted really well to the half time team talk and started to compete better in midfield with Tommy Glasscoe being the pick and getting a well deserved and extremely well taken goal. The Wyken goal them seemed to have a charmed life with Elliot rounding the goalkeeper only to find his effort striking the foot of the post. 2 goal line clearances and some excellent goalkeeping from the Wyken keeper meant we hadn’t found the equaliser. With less than a minute to go JJ pushed forward, spun on a loose ball some 20 yards out and unleashed an unstoppable rocket that gave the Wyken keeper no chance and which would still be travelling now if the net hadn’t got in the way! Brinklow 7 Leamington Hibs 1 One of those days where everything that we tried came off and with Hibs not being at their best for the first half of the game we were soon in command and 6-0 up at half time. Into the second half and Hibs managed to pull one back but by that time we were comfortable and ran out 7-1 winners. It’s odd to say, with such a score line, but the defence today was magnificent with our fullbacks Arron and Rich being the pick. Leamington Hibs 2 Brinklow 3 A first half into a fierce gale & sleet meant we really struggled and it appeared the luck was with Hibs when we turned around only to find that there was now little wind and the snow had abated. However we spent the majority of the 2nd period camped in the Hibs half but with only an equaliser to show. More pressure, but Hibs got a second from a free kick and left us only 7 or 8 minutes to get something out of the game. A crucial equaliser came with minutes to spare and whilst I was insisting that JJ clear the ball from his own penalty area and settle for the draw he casually turned the winger and launched a ball over the Hibs full back for Wendell to fly onto, run half the length of the pitch and smash into the back of the net – Wonderful!!
A similar situation to last time, with Canley working hard in the 1st half to deny us space and then the lads taking control in the 2nd as the Canley legs started to flag. Canley defensively are a very strong unit and we found it difficult on the very slippery surface to play our usual passing game, however after a team talk at half time where we asked the lads to take on the Canley fullbacks & get them turning we found the advantage and it wasn’t long before we fired home the first. This meant we were able to relax a bit more & play rather than chase the game. What was really pleasing to see was that the team did exactly as we asked them to do at half time with Tommy Glasscoe having an exceptionally 2nd half with his wingplay and Jack’s finishing being the difference. We must also not forget the defence who coped exceptionally on a pitch that was a defenders nightmare. Restricting Canley to 1 clear cut chance was excellent on the day. Thanks must go to Mick Holt for chasing around to organise another pitch and ensuring the game was played when many were called off. Also thanks to Peter Day for steping in at the last minute to referee the game. It should be noted that the older ages groups in the club have certainly started the season well with the Youth team currently top, u16 & u15’s 2nd, u14’s top and the u12’s 3rd (there is no u13’s team) – Who says Brinklow can’t play 11-a-side!!!!
Rugby Town Boys 4 Brinklow 4 (Rugby Town win 4-3 on Penaltys after Extra Time) This was what Junior football is all about - honest endeavour, some great goals, some great defending and an exciting finish that unfortunately went just the wrong way for Brinklow. I'm not going to dwell on the specific incidents that happened in the game as it could take forever, but just to say well done to both teams for putting on such a great game of football. Nuneaton Town Community 2 Brinklow 0 (Cup) No one who wasn’t at the match will know how good a performance this was today. Against last seasons ‘A’ league champions who haven’t dropped a point this season the team put on a performance of which we can all be proud. Right from the off the quality of the ‘The Griff’ was clear, the passing and movement was outstanding however we were matching them in all quarters, keeping our shape and working our socks off to prevent their midfield taking control. 30 minutes in and at 0-0 it was clear we were in the game, we’d had a couple of half chances and a one-on-one with the keeper from Jack who through sheer persistence had robbed the back four of the ball but just couldn’t quite round the keeper. All was looking great but an unfortunate slip meant that a through ball that would have been cleared found it’s way to a Griff striker to make it 1-0. At this stage Griff stepped up the pace and looked like they might get another but an outstanding save low to his left from Matty kept the score at 1-0 and took us into half time. Into the second half and our plan of keeping it tight and then pushing on towards the end of the game looked to be working however 10 minutes from the end a neat passing move from the Griff broke our ranks and made it 2-0, we tried to lift our game but the hard work and total commitment had told on the legs of the team and we had nothing more to give. This was an outstanding performance against the best team in the area and we should all be proud of the improvements the lads have made and the performance they gave throughout the game.
A spectacular 25 minutes at the start of the first half saw Brinklow roar into a 5-0 lead and at this stage everyone was wondering how many we were going to get. The team were playing some very attractive passing football and carving open the Binley Woods defence on almost every occasion. The midfield were picking up ever loose ball and using the possession with intelligence, spreading the ball wide & allowing our pace and ability down the flanks to become a big factor in the game. At this point however the Binley Woods midfield rallied, started winning ball and sucked in our wider players which made the game very narrow. With so many in the middle of the park the game became a bit scrappy & we were glad of half time which gave us the chance to re-organise. A couple of changes at half time & we started playing the passing game again, but without the reward of the goals that came in the first half. Binley Woods continued to have there share of the possession until a couple of strikes for us effectively killed the game off as a competition. Late on saw Binley Woods reduced to 10 men as an unprovoked attack on Craig saw the Binley Woods player leave the field for a head butt. Fortunately there was no serious damage which is surprising as you could hear the contact from the touchline! A game completely spoilt for both sides by the referee, however at least Steve got some good photos, see them - HERE Thanks to our club photographer Steve Hyde for providing images of the game
Woodloes 2 Brinklow 8 (Birmingham Cup) That's better!! This game was filled with quality goals from both side and was a pleasure to watch. Pace was the key to this game, with Woodloes playing a very high line it compressed the play in midfield and made it difficult to get time on the ball. Playing a high line requires that the midfield work very hard to close the ball and stop the through-ball. This Woodloes did very well for the first part of the game and we were caught offside on several occasions. However as the heat of the day started to tell and our forwards improved the timing of their runs we started to find success, the through balls started to find their targets, & once away the pace of our strike force meant their was only going to be one winner. If I'm honest we could have had a few more goals today but in general I though the finishing was first rate and the reaction from the lads after last weeks disappointing performance has to be applauded. A big plus point from the game was that we learnt to play with wing-backs and although we reverted to a more traditional 4-4-2 for the 2nd half it means we can quickly organise ourselves into this formation if the need arises..
Brinklow 1 Rugby Town Colts 3 From wonderful to woeful?? Not quite, but we certainly weren't at the races today. I've said before that you can sense during the warm up whether the team is going to play well. It was clear from the off that today we were going to have one of those days. Against the run of play we scored a well constructed & taken goal from Glasscoe however this was followed up by a general lack of communication to gift Town an equaliser which took the teams into half time at 1-1. I would be less disappointed if we had simply been beaten by a better side. On the day Rugby Town deserved their victory but I know we are much better than that, which makes it all the more frustrating. We expect more focus at the start of next weeks game which will lead to a better performance.
Brinklow 3 Canley 1 Wonderful!! I should have known we were going to play well when we kicked off the game with a dozen passes that ended in a shot going narrowly wide.
For the third game in a row we managed to keep a clean sheet - how long can we keep this going lads? A++ all round lads - Well Done!! Brinklow U16's
First game of the season and off to a good start. It was a surprise to find that we were on Astroturf at the Alan Higgs centre due to Finhams waterlogged pitch but I thought this would suit us as we have become a very good passing team. However the high bouncing ball made it very difficult to get it down & play which made the game somewhat scrappy. All round we never looked in trouble in this game & Finham only really looked dangerous when we became too casual towards the later part of the game. A real plus for this season is that all around our aerial strength has come on leaps & bounds & we will frighten a number of teams with our ability in the air. Keep it going!!
